Thanks to modern research and technology, new solutions for hearing loss are constantly being developed. Artificial intelligence (AI) has played a big role in this in recent years. Now, researchers at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) in Portugal have advanced this technology.
How the AI Works
A team of scientists at FCTUC have developed an AI model to be used to predict hearing loss. By analyzing existing databases, this AI model identifies geographic areas with high incidences of hearing loss and the associated risk factors common to these areas.
It has identified an association between industrial areas or airports and increased incidence of hearing loss, as well as socioeconomic factors relating to access to hearing aids. Data visualizations from the model additionally are being used to inform targeted interventions.
What this Means for Hearing Healthcare
The goal of this project is to improve informed decision making and accessibility in hearing healthcare. By using existing data and validated models, this AI can help refine evidence-based predictions for areas of hearing healthcare that are lacking. The research team also hopes to expand this model to other related conditions, like diabetes and cardiovascular health.
