FAQ

Below are some common questions on hearing loss and cold therapy

What are the different causes of hearing loss?

Hearing loss can be caused by many things, including aging, viral infections, certain medications, physical trauma, genetics, and loud noise exposures. It can range from mild to severe and is one of the most common sensory issues worldwide.

What is the cochlea?

The cochlea (inner ear) is the “hearing” part of the ear. It is a fluid-filled, spiral structure in the inner ear responsible for transforming sound waves into electrical impulses that travel to the brain via the auditory nerve. It contains thousands of tiny sensory cells called hair cells, which allow us to detect sound. The cochlea is located deep inside the skull, just behind the outer ear.

How does hearing loss occur?

Hearing loss from noise, blasts, or physical trauma like surgery occurs due to damage to the cochlea (inner ear). The delicate hair cells of the cochlea die due to these traumas, and the resulting inflammatory processes in the inner ear worsens this effect. Over time, loss of these hair cells leads to permanent hearing loss.

How does cold therapy protect hearing?

Cooling the cochlea during and after these traumas combats the inflammatory process, thereby preserving hair cells and protecting hearing.

Are there any studies supporting the effectiveness of cold therapy for hearing preservation?

RestorEar and our collaborators have studied cold therapy for hearing preservation for over a decade. The work of our research partners is supported by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and Veterans Affairs, and is used directly in the development of our products. How do I use ReBound products?

Instructions for using RestorEar products can be found on their packaging as well as on our product page. Additionally, you may watch these videos for a demonstration on using ReBound and ReBoundLite.

Is ReBound a replacement for hearing protection like earplugs or earmuffs?

ReBound was created to minimize the harmful effects of loud noise AFTER exposure. While it doesn’t replace protective measures like earplugs and earmuffs, which can be used during noise events, ReBound fills in the gaps of hearing loss prevention. Use earplugs or earmuffs during a noise event—and pair them with ReBound afterwards for fuller protection.

Does ReBound cure deafness?

Currently, there are no FDA-approved cures for deafness. ReBound works best when used within 24 hours of noise exposure. It cannot restore past hearing loss or cure deafness.

Are RestorEar products FDA approved?
